i am trying to program the crest system into my 396xt, i think i done everything right, but my scanner doesnt pick it up. I live on the lowermainland, and in reading the forums people say they can monitor crest from vancouver.

I am using a computer program called Freescan
i set the system in the scanner as Mot 2/p25
i inputted all freqs (including control channels) for all sites (and ensured they are all correct using rrdb)
i set the custom table: base freq (lower) 139.635 (upper) 145.3200 offset 380 and spacing 15...(do i do that for all sites)?

Anyone see if i am missing somethin or doing somethin incorrect? Ur help is greatly appreciated thanx

spacing is 12.5 not 15 . Hope this helps a bit. your freqs should look something like this 142.03500 .

Are you receiving the control channel when you program in the frequency for the site you are trying to listen too ? My reception to CREST is limited by a hill . Not sure what kind of line of sight you have to the sites .

Hey guys thanks for helping me out...

i changed the spacing to 12.5... (now i can get some single strength from the Mt. Bruce Repeater, nothing heard though)

As for my line of sight, i live close to the water in ladner delta, basicaly i have no mountians, hills or obstacles other than some houses.

As for the control channel..i don't pick nothin up... (it should make that garble sound, like when on the ECOMM system)

Just out of curiosity, when i input the frequencies in, i just go in order how it is listed right? or do i have to do something different.

again thanks for your help, i will keep trying

With that type of system you don't have to have the freqs in any particular order . Sounds like you probably won't hear much more than Mt Bruce from your location . Had the same problem when I lived in Ladner . English Bluff blocks a lot of reception from the south island . Mt Bruce has mostly Gulf Islands talk groups on it . You should hear a fair bit of traffic on it .

Hummm thats weird

Thought its a 15khz spacing as per radio reference web page and our own scanbc web wiki for the Crest system.

15. seems to work for me on both the 396/996 and 396xt???????

thanks for all the input

i can fully pick up the control channel, for Mt Bruce RPTR, just don't hear anything, and i left it on for a hour, and it was dead, not a sound.

According to the RRDB, it shows there are 4 frequencies that one would input for that specific rptr, according to the link provided, by (xjf79) it only shows there are 3 frequencies that one would input. the missing one would be (142.05000). Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why? which site should i follow?

for me, either spacing works, 15 or 12.5, i get the same resualt, control channel pick up, but nothing herd.

I guess when i program the system band plan, it is the "VHF BAND" oppose to the UHF?

Other wise i just have to wait till i head over to the island.

again thanks for all your input...Tim

When you hold on the CC, and you can hear it, any active TG's will show on the display.

That site may not have a lot of traffic on it.

Yeah I don't know if Crest is following IC redeployemnt plan for narrow banding . Foresty , MOH ,RCMP has so far . If you want to read the redeployment plan from IC click the link. http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.ns ... 01654.html Annex 1 http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.ns ... 09143.html

No one has addressed the key issue with that radio, THE RADIO IS DEAF WITH BUILT IN ANTENNA, you need a directional yagi pointed south towards Victoira, Yeah sure I get Crest but Camosak tower I only get certain freq's not the control channel, so I listen to that tower conventionally (not great) but ok, the only thing that built in antenna is barely usefull for is close call and limited range stuff, even wih E-comm it's only oK. put a discone or other all band ant up and you will get better range.

Im here on holidays and am in New West and am picking up Mt Bruce on my 996XT just fine with my stock antenna. alot of the problem with not picking things up is location. I have found many times my scanner will work better in different locations in my house.

hummm... tried the 12.5 spacing on the xt today while I was out at ubc... all I could rcv on the radio display screen were tgid#s on sites being tracked ie..Mt Doug, Camosack, Mt Bruce etc etc .. no voice conversations heard.
I then switched back to 15.0 spacing and received all voice calls and tgid#s for the tracked sites
