Introduction

The District of Elkford, with a population of 2,463 as of 2006, within the Rocky Mountains 32 km North of *Sparwood. RCMP services are provided by the Elk Valley Regional RCMP detachment. Elkford is served by the Elkford Fire Department. Emergency health services are provided to the city by the British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS).

Fire

The Elkford Fire Department (EFD) is a composite department operating out of 2 stations. The fire department has 1 full-time fire chief and a complement of volunteers. EFD provides fire suppression, motor vehicle extrication and rescue services to the district as well as first responder services for medical calls.

Ambulance

The British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS) operates 1 station located close to the Sparwood Health Centre.

Station 405

Station 405 is located at 212 Alpine Way with the Elkford Community Health Centre. This station runs 1 callout car but due to staff shortages it may not be manned and an ambulance will respond from Sparwood

The station is manned entirely by part-time paramedics.

A common cross coverage location is Highway 43 at Line Creek Mine Rd for coverage of the Sparwood and Elkford areas.

STARS

The Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) provides airevac air ambulance helicopter services to the East Kootenay region of the province. STARS is billed to the Province of BC for each flight. Certain BCAS MPDS criteria may lead to an autolaunch of STARS. BCAS paramedics may also request STARS be launched once on scene based on certain injuries. When a BCAS crew activates STARS it may be directed to the scene or to intercept at the hospital. STARS may also respond to the hospital based on a doctor's request. STARS flying time to Cranbrook from their Calgary Airport base is 49 minutes
