The fire department radio communications system configuration is a 2 channel radio repeater system. The repeaters are located at the Fire Hall. The repeater antennas are mounted on a 32 metre (105 foot) radio tower at the Fire Hall. The channel 1 repeater is connected to the emergency telephone line via a radiotelephone line interconnect unit, to enable authorized Fire Department personnel to remotely receive emergency telephone calls and communicate with the caller via selected Fire Department radios. Repeater channel 1 is connected via an antenna duplexer to its own antenna that is mounted on the side of the radio tower at the fire hall. Repeater channel 2 is the fire department two-way operations radio channel that is used for emergency response communications and for non-emergency fire department business communications. The channel 2 repeater is connected via an antenna duplexer to its own antenna that is mounted on the top of the radio tower at the fire hall. The channel 2 repeater transmitter frequency (talk-around frequency) is used for the simplex tactical channel. All Fire Department radios are normally selected to operate on repeater channel 2. Personnel with selected radios are also able to remotely activate the Fire Department paging system over the channel 2 repeater.

Paging out (sending an audio tone) via the Fire Department paging system is achieved via the paging encoder that is connected to repeater channel 2. The paging encoder can be accessed locally at the Fire Hall, or remotely over the radio system. Fire Department personnel enter a specific paging code into the paging encoder and press the “send” button. The encoder transmits the audio tone associated with the selected paging coded over repeater channel 2 transmitter. The paging system uses single audio tones and not 2-tone paging tones. If accessed locally at the fire hall the following codes can be entered: Code 300 p: to tone out all staff Code 320 p: to tone out extrication personnel Code 250 p: to tone out only career personnel
